Ormond Beach’s Cumberland Avenue Drainage Concerns Reach the City Commission

Residential street with a storm drain in Ormond Beach, Florida

Ormond Beach’s biggest drainage projects get most of the attention, but some neighborhoods are still waiting their turn. In late 2025, residents of one of them spoke up.

Residents at the Commission

The Observer reported in November 2025 that residents from the Cumberland Avenue area presented serious stormwater drainage problems to the City Commission. The area was identified as a problem spot in the city’s 2023 stormwater master plan, and its infrastructure dates to the 1960s and 1970s and needs replacement.

Commissioner Travis Sargent said resolving the area “needs to be a top priority.” Assistant City Manager Shawn Finley explained that having projects ready to build helps the city win funding.

The state funding requests

At the same meeting, the commission approved $1.375 million in state funding requests for two water projects: $750,000 toward a $2.9 million reclaimed water main and $625,000 toward a $2.55 million sanitary sewer force main. Commissioner Harold Briley noted state budgets were expected to be tighter than in 2025. The city is also working with Volusia County’s Transform386 program on stormwater funding.
