When a hurricane is coming, the most important question is simple: do I need to leave? Flagler County changed how it answers that question to make it easier to understand.
Neighborhood names instead of letters
FlaglerLive reported in 2023 that Flagler County replaced its confusing letter-based evacuation zones with neighborhood names that residents actually use, such as Seminole Woods or the Woodlands in Palm Coast, the Lambert Avenue neighborhood in Flagler Beach, and Mondex or Daytona North in western Flagler.
Jonathan Lord, the county’s emergency management director, made the county’s approach clear: “We’re going to err on the side of caution.”
